I tried to not like this novel. Set in the early years of Mao's "New China," against the backdrop of the first PRC political purges and, simultaneously, China's entry into the Korean War, Chang's insights and fine description of life and love in the then "New China" rings remarkably true 60 years on, both from what we now know of early s and what we have seen in China over the past six decades. She also explains how the field's development was retarded at times because scientists had "crazy ideas" that they were afraid would damage their careers if made known, but which turned out to be entirely correct. Young students volunteer to go the countryside to indoctrinate farmers about the governments plans for land reform. I know there's a lot of chatter in the lit crit world about Chang, her loyalties, and "how can she write about this if she wasn't there". His identity as a party insider is confirmed by his participation in the executions of landlords and his attempt to justify to himself the brutalities he has witnessed: There is much to like in this later novel, Naked Earth. Thanks for telling us about the problem.
